Insights · Choosing a partner

7 questions to ask before hiring a software development partner.

Custom software is a bigger commitment than a website: it's harder to switch providers later, and it usually runs a real part of your business. Here's what to check before you sign anything.

1. Can I see real, working software you've built?

Mockups and slide decks are easy. Ask for links to live products currently used by real businesses, not just concept designs.

2. Who owns the code and the data?

Get clarity upfront on whether you own the software outright or are licensing it, and where your business data is stored.

3. What happens after launch?

Software needs bug fixes, updates, and support long after launch. Ask exactly what ongoing support is included and what costs extra.

4. Do they understand my industry?

A developer who has already built software for logistics, healthcare, or field sales will ask sharper questions and avoid rebuilding solved problems from scratch.

5. How is my data secured?

Ask about encryption, backups, and access control, especially if the software will hold customer, financial, or location data.

6. Can it grow with my business?

Ask how the system handles more users, more data, or a second location, before you need it, not after it breaks.

7. Is there one team, or will I be passed around?

A single team handling planning, development, and support end to end is usually faster to work with than separate agencies for design, build, and support.
